Perhaps it's the largely episodic nature that made the network think they could show it out of order. Each episode it seems you learn a little more about this universe and how it works and there are some episodes that rely on having seen earlier ones, so it doesn't work out of order as much as some episodic shows do.

The costume designer used her own altered wedding dress for Inara's ball gown. That's something I remember from the DVD Extras. Remember those?!

The look on Inara's face when Mal drew the wrong conclusion at the end is priceless. BTW, if you haven't already watched the movie, you should watch "The River Sessions" online shorts that came out in the lead up to the theatrical movie release. They give some insight into her character backstory.

Everybody ships Mal and Inara. Weird, isn't it? A Nigerian reactor immediately caught on to the wedding ceremony, so there was some real basis to it. My question: How did Saffron(?) insinuate herself among the townspeople? I can only guess the townspeople wondered who this strange (and uncommonly hot) woman was that was crashing their party...but they were too polite and in too much good spirit to make a fuss. You were certainly hitting the home run with your suspicion, though. I think the foot washing thing mentioned by Inara and Saffron(?) was a clue that Saffron(?) had Companion training. I wouldn't be surprised if foot washing (which can be extremely sensual) actually is part of Companion training. Isn't this a fun series?

I like the sound of your laugh. I think I heard it about a thousand times this episode. Keep going Cat, there are no bad episodes but you are coming up on some of the best episodes.

Browncoats! I just had this thought and I loved it and needed to share! Knowing saffron wouldn't it be super cool to have had her infiltrate over episodes instead of the single episode. I would have loved to seen her more, her character is fantastic and the actor is chefs kiss Would have been cool to see her warm everyone up slowly. Maybe try to steer Serenity the way she needs to go but all manipulative!! Season finale would be her turning on the crew after being with them for 6 episodes.

I feel that if this show had continued Saffron would have eventually become a regular part of the crew

I think one of Mal's problems is he can't see beyond what Inara does for a living. He keeps calling her a whore, even though a Companion is so much more than that. And we know from the pilot episode that he was raised a Catholic, from him kissing his cross or medal, and talking about God not letting them die because they were too pretty. He lost his faith when his side abandoned them in Serenity Valley, but that doesn't mean he shed his conservative religious upbringing, he still thinks in terms of sex for money being sinful. So I think he is repressing his feelings for Inara because he just doesn't consider her as a potential partner, she's off-limits. He definitely likes and respects her as a person but he doesn't respect what she does - as we saw in Shindig, he said about Atherton, "I may not respect your job, but he didn't respect you." He sees her work as a job, what she does for a living; he doesn't understand that it is who she is, that it is a calling, much like Book's calling to be a priest. Also, Companions are essentially part of the Alliance upper society, quite respectable, as we saw in The Train Job and again in Shindig. Her presence reminds him of the Alliance, which has to grate on his nerves a bit, which may be another reason why he keeps calling her a whore. But I think he does subconsciously understand that it isn't something she is willing to give up, and he couldn't ask her to, but at the same time he couldn't be with someone who is continuing to be "a whore" in his way of thinking. Inara would have to be the one to initiate that heart to heart conversation, and perhaps she understands him better than he understands himself. Is she willing to give up her calling to be with him? Not so far. Could he adjust his attitude? Maybe, but he's going to have to stop calling her a whore and see her for her true self, which yes, includes sex work. Stay tuned!

I think one reason this is so funny is because we’ve gotten to know our characters. So many great lines and interactions between the crew. Now that you finished the episodes, go back and watch some male reactors respond to this episode. Almost invariably they fall completely for Saffron’s “innocence” and are then shocked when she drugs Mal. Interesting that women tend to give the girl the side-eye from the start.

You are the only person I have ever known who suspected Saffron from the beginning.

23:15 Well in all fairness - Jayne has a point in a world where this type of drugging men is a common practice by female criminals.

25:43 "Someone ever tries to kill you, you try to kill em right back!" Seems Jayne shares that philosophy with Mal :)

I love how this show turns realistic human psychology into comedy. Mal was embarassed in front of his crew and the whole episode he tried to find some redemption. He was desperate to find at leas one person who also fell for Saffron's deception, so his brain got fixated on that. And likewise - since we saw the whole thing from different perspective we did not even consider Mal's point of view. We wanted him to figure out what Inara really did, so we were also fixated on it - because that's what our brain wanted. And just as we are to process this "of course" moment, we watch Malcolm leave the room increadibly pleased with himself - because of course he would :)

Definitely the Special hell for me. Jayne was absolutely right, though. Vera was MILES more worthy.

Even here on Earth, different countries have different types of marriage styles! I have seen a Thai wedding and the basics are the same, but the rest is totally different!

In the millionth time I'm watching this episode, I'm just now recognizing that Inarra refuses to be examined AT ALL. Interesting....

Season 1 is kind of rough on re-watches. Willow hasn't developed a personality, Xander is the worst, the Master is as threatening as a cardboard cutout of Nosferatu. Luckily Buffy gets all the good lines and Giles is Giles right away. Buffy has a tough time dating. Men are intimidated by strong women.

The only goobers who think that the first season is not reprsentative of the show don’t grasp two things. First, as with a novel, the early chapters of Buffy are essential to build up the story. But then they mistake comic books and comic book movies for literature, which they are not. They are sketches for the masses. Buffy, in other words, like a novel unfolds and what comes before unfolds into what comes after. Duh.. Second, they don’t grasp-and this is a pretty impressive example of amnesia run amok-that tonally the first season of the show is just like later seasons. All seasons of Buffy are full of comedy, dark comedy, tragedy, satire, parody, drama, melodrama. Why picking on the one kid? Uh, you do know that lions, for example, choose the weakest of wildebeast, for instance, for a kill. Why? Uh, because it is easy. Speaking of you knows, every episode of Buffy plays with metaphors, which, along with character and story arcs tie the series together. And the metaphor in this episode is perhaps that like the wild beast humans too go after the weak and vulnerable in high school and in life. See bullying. See rape and rapists. I lived in Canada. I was never taught that running from bears in Alberta and BC was a good idea. In fact, running from beats of prey is not really a good idea since humans can’t outrun most of them. But hey, whatever floats... Finally, love the inappropriate literalism. But hey, fundamentalism is a general human trait isn’t it? Interesting.

Fun fact, whenever Xander has to play a horrible jerk it's usually Nicholas Brendan's twin brother playing the part.

Definitely don't give up! Season one is a bit cringey in some stories, but when season 2 hits....girl...the drama!

16:36 xander has a crush on buffy and not willow. that's the truth. what possessed xander said was just that in the most hurtful nasty embellished way possible. so the truth is completely innocuous but when stated evilly it sounds awful. so you're right but i think it's not bad as you make it seem there.

As hyenas, like these, mostly live in African savannahs and grassland (although in the East they are found in jungles, too) scavenging dead carcasses and grabbing other predators' kills in formidable packs, the music is most likely made of sounds of the hot, dusty, arid African deserts and mountains. They steer clear of male lions that will attack any lone hyenas, but will rush a female lioness, though. The writers got a good part of the lore right. In Buffy, they use the many threats and demanding situations as a metaphor for their teenage high-school life, relationships and growing pains.

Jack has always been one of my least favorite characters. He is definitely one of the more complex characters, it’s just he’s so……obnoxious that other characters are definitely more fun to follow than him.

One of my favorite through lines of the first couple seasons that starts here is Chang and Duncan's genuine dislike of one another. It's a fun little subplot.

Mostly Buffy is a teen drama, with the real trials of growing up represented as monsters. Some episodes it's more blatant than others. Teen dramas often have some comedy, perhaps Buffy has more then most, but it has darker elements as well. Xander himself has been a victim of bullying, I don't think he'd find the bullying funny. Bullied kids often become bullies, but not because they find it funny. 6:41 <<He's not terrinble.>> Yes, he is terrible. Even when he is not posessed by a Hyena spirit he is a teenage boy, showing the worst traits of the type. Willow and Xander have been friends for almost their entire lives, even when it was clear she was smart and he was not, except in insulting people and being subtle enough to get away with it most of the time, they stayed friends. 20:08 Willow's not as naive as she sometimes appears. They deliberately made it look as if she was going to let him out, but even though she is infatuated with him, she is smarter than that,
